Insights Discovery, Tailormade

We are happy to use our experience of delivering Insights Discovery to create a program designed for your exact needs or combine it with other material.

Insights Discovery is one of the most widely used personality tests worldwide. It is based on the work of the psychologist Carl Gustav Jung who, based in Switzerland, was a pioneer in the field of typology.

When you fill out the Insights Discovery Evaluator, you will receive a personal, detailed report that forms the basis for reflection, coaching and team development workshops. The reports are very detailed and use a color scheme that is easy to remember and provides an effective basis for improving communication, teamwork and leadership.

History of the Insights Discovery Personality Instrument

Like the Myers Briggs MBTI tool, Insights Discovery is based on the extensive research of Swiss psychologist Dr Carl Gustav Jung and the work of one of Jung’s students, Jolande Jacobi.

During the World War II, Katharine Cook Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers used Jung and Jacobi’s work to create one of the first psychometric instruments, the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) which is today still the most widely used psychometric instrument worldwide.

The Insights Discovery model was developed by Andi and Andy Lothian (the founders of the Insights Group) in the late 90’s and built on Jung and Jacobi’s research by creating a four-colour model to represent observable behavioural patterns.

For those based in Switzerland who are interested to learn more about Carl Gustav Jung, we recommend a visit to the C.G. Jung Haus in Zurich (www.cgjunghaus.ch).

The Structure of the Insights Discovery Model

The different colours of the Insights Discovery model represent different types of “energy” or, as Jung called them, “attitudinal functions”. Each person uses a different mixture of these energies and, often, one colour is more dominant than the others:

Extraverted Thinking

is represented by “Fiery Red”: competitive, demanding, determined, strong-willed, purposeful

Introverted Thinking

is represented by “Cool Blue”: cautious, precise, deliberate, questioning, formal

Extraverted Feeling

is represented by “Sunshine Yellow”: sociable, dynamic, demonstrative, enthusiastic, persuasive

Introverted Feeling

is represented by “Earth Green”: caring, encouraging, sharing, patient, relaxed

Participants generally find the Insights four-colour model very easy to remember and it can provide a useful and neutral “common language”, reducing conflict and providing a safe way to speak about interpersonal dynamics in groups and teams.

Using Insights Discovery

The first step in using the Insights Discovery instrument is for participants to complete an online, confidential “evaluator” composed of 25 multiple-choice questions based around 100 pairs of words. The questionnaire usually takes about 15-20 minutes to complete.

The results of this questionnaire are not immediately provided to the participant, but come to us at Tree Trunk Partners. We create a personalized, unique and detailed personality report which we then share with participants either in an individual debriefing session (face-to-face, or by phone/video), or in a workshop setting.

Licensed Practitioners In Switzerland

As licensed users of the Insights Discovery system, we only provide results and reports in combination with an individual debriefing or attendance at a workshop. We work both virtually and in live settings.

In our Insights Discovery workshops we sometimes use a large Insights “mat” and participants may choose to take up their respective positions on the wheel in order to illustrate the psychological relationship to other group members.

We deliver our workshops, training and coaching either virtually or in live sessions, for example in Zurich, Zug, Basel, Baar, Bern, Lucerne, Winterthur, St. Gallen and the rest of Switzerland.

Validity and Reliability

Insights Discovery has been validated based on data from millions of profiles created worldwide over more than 20 years.

The instrument has been independently validated by the Psychological Testing Centre (PTC) of the British Psychological Society and has received their PTC Kitemark certification for compliance with the test guidelines of the European Federation of Psychologists’ Associations (EFPA).

It has also been certified by global quality assurance and psychological test assessors DNV GL.

Additional Reading:

For those wishing to discover more about the theoretical basis for the Insights Discovery system we recommend the following books:

  • Jacobi, J. (1942) Die Psychologie von C. G. Jung
  • Jung, C. G. (1921) Psychologische Typen: Gesammelte Werke 6
  • Sharp, D. (1936) Personality Types: Jung’s model of typology
The training was judged as very useful and positive by all the participants and the benefits were observable in the team soon afterwards.
