Insights Discovery Training
in Switzerland

Insights® Discovery is a powerful tool for helping us better understand how we, and those around us, function and interact. This understanding leads to improvements in our ability to communicate with and influence others and helps teams perform at their best.

Insights Discovery is one of the most widely used personality tools worldwide. It is based on the work of the Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung, who was a pioneer in the field of typology.

When you fill out the Insights Discovery Evaluator, you will receive a personal, detailed report that forms the basis for reflection, coaching and team development workshops. The reports are very detailed and use a color scheme that is easy to remember and provides an effective basis for improving communication, teamwork and leadership.

History of the Insights Discovery Personality Instrument

Like the Myers Briggs MBTI tool, Insights Discovery is based on the extensive research of Swiss psychologist Dr Carl Gustav Jung and the work of one of Jung’s students, Jolande Jacobi.

During the World War II, Katharine Cook Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers used Jung and Jacobi’s work to create one of the first psychometric instruments, the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) which is today still the most widely used psychometric instrument worldwide.

The Insights Discovery model was developed by Andi and Andy Lothian (the founders of the Insights Group) in the late 90’s and built on Jung and Jacobi’s research by creating a four-colour model to represent observable behavioural patterns.

The Structure of the Insights Discovery Model

The different colours of the Insights Discovery model represent different types of “energy” or, as Jung called them, “attitudinal functions”. Each person uses a different mixture of these energies and, often, one colour is more dominant than the others:

Extraverted Thinking

is represented by “Fiery Red”: competitive, demanding, determined, strong-willed, purposeful

Introverted Thinking

is represented by “Cool Blue”: cautious, precise, deliberate, questioning, formal

Extraverted Feeling

is represented by “Sunshine Yellow”: sociable, dynamic, demonstrative, enthusiastic, persuasive

Introverted Feeling

is represented by “Earth Green”: caring, encouraging, sharing, patient, relaxed

Participants generally find the Insights Discovery colours very easy to remember and the model can provide a useful and neutral “common language”, reducing conflict and providing a safe way to speak about interpersonal dynamics in groups and teams.

Using Insights Discovery

The first step in using the Insights Discovery instrument is for participants to complete an online, confidential “evaluator” composed of 25 multiple-choice questions based around 100 pairs of words. The questionnaire usually takes about 15-20 minutes to complete.

The results of this questionnaire are not immediately provided to the participant, but come to us at Tree Trunk Partners. We create a personalized, unique and detailed personality profile report which we then share with participants either in an individual debriefing session (face-to-face, or by phone/video), or in a workshop setting.

Licensed Practitioner

As licensed users of the Insights Discovery system, we only provide results and reports in combination with an individual debriefing or attendance at a workshop.

In our workshops and training we often use a large Insights Discovery wheel or “mat” placed on the floor and participants may choose to take up their respective positions on the wheel in order to illustrate the psychological relationship to other group members.

We deliver our workshops, training and coaching either virtually or in live sessions, for example in Zurich, Zug, Basel, Baar, Bern, Lucerne, Winterthur, St. Gallen and the rest of Switzerland.

Validity and Reliability

Insights Discovery has been validated based on data from millions of profiles created worldwide over more than 20 years.

The instrument has been independently validated by the Psychological Testing Centre (PTC) of the British Psychological Society and has received their PTC Kitemark certification for compliance with the test guidelines of the European Federation of Psychologists’ Associations (EFPA).

It has also been certified by global quality assurance and psychological test assessors DNV GL.

  • Jung, C. G. (1921) Psychologische Typen: Gesammelte Werke 6

The training was judged as very useful and positive by all the participants and the benefits were observable in the team soon afterwards.

    What is Insights Discovery?
Insights® Discovery is a psychometric tool used to identify a person’s personal preferences. It is based on the theory of typology developed in 1921 by the Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung. It uses the dichotomies of extraversion-introversion, thinking-feeling, and intuition-sensing to represent a person’s style according to a four-colour model.

What is the meaning of the four Insights Discovery colours?
The four colours of the Insights® Discovery model (red, yellow, green and blue) are used to represent a person’s individual preferences for interacting with the external environment. Red is used to represent a preference for extraversion and thinking, yellow for extraversion and feeling, green for introversion and feeling, and blue for introversion and thinking.

What is the four colour model of Insights Discovery?
The four-color model of Insights® Discovery is based on the typology theory of Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung and represents an individual’s preference for focussing on the inner or outer world (introversion versus extraversion), thinking versus feeling when making decisions, and sensing versus intuition when assimilating data from the environment.

How much does an Insights Discovery test cost?
An Insights® Discovery “test” typically costs between SFr 180 and SFr 250. The cost depends on many factors such as the institution conducting the test, the context (individual coaching session or a group training), the number of optional modules included, etc. It’s actually not a test but a non-judgmental assessment of a person's preferences for interacting with their internal and external environments. For a detailed quote, please contact us.

Where can I do an Insights Discovery online test?
The Insights online test can be completed here and takes about 15 minutes to complete. Please contact us in advance to discuss your exact needs. We don't call it a "test" (because there are no right or wrong answers), but an "Evaluator". The Evaluator provides a non-judging assessment of a person's preferences for interacting with others, and the world around them.

Where can I get Insights Discovery building blocks?
4 lego-style building blocks in red, green, yellow and blue, representing the four colours from the Insights Discovery model We supply the colored Insights blocks to participants in our programs and to those completing the Insights Discovery test. The building blocks are a handy way to remind yourself, and others, of your preferred use of colour energies. We find that many program participants like to have them on display on their desks and that this can also trigger helpful discussions with colleagues about preferred working styles. You can also contact us to receive your own set of Insights coloured blocks.
